Because a mattress is an expensive purchase, you’ll want to make sure it lasts by knowing how to clean it.

Mattresses may collect dust mites, dead skin, dirt, and other detritus, necessitating frequent cleaning – especially if you have allergies, have pets, or are just a late-night snacker.

The good news is that cleaning a mattress is significantly less difficult than you would believe.

Continue reading to learn the nine easy methods to keeping your mattress clean and ready for years of napping.

Here are some excellent suggestions for taking proper care of your mattress, courtesy of professional views from Ed Curry, president of mattress firm Duxiana, and Neil Parikh, creator of Casper.

Step 2. Remove All Of The Linen From The Bed And Wash It

While you’re cleaning the mattress, remove the sheets, pillowcases, and mattress covers and wash them in the washing machine.

Dust mites may be removed from bedding by washing it in hot water.

You may be able to wash your pillows as well, depending on the kind.

(Check the care label twice.)

Step 3. Clean The Mattress With A Vacuum

Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner to go over the whole surface of the mattress, including the sides.

Pay extra attention to seams and use the crevice attachment to remove any debris or dust that may be hiding.

Step 4. Use A Stain Remover To Spot-clean Your Mattress

Now it’s time to concentrate on removing stains from the mattress, which requires spot-cleaning.

Never wet your mattress or clean it directly with water or cleaning solution.

For example, memory foam isn’t designed to become wet.

As a result, it’s essential to approach with care and adhere to the philosophy of “less is more.”

So it’ll be spot-cleaning with a stain remover.

The kind of stain and the type of mattress will determine the stain remover you choose.

Use an enzyme cleanser to remove biological stains.

Spray the cleanser onto a clean white cloth, then use the cloth to dab the stained area.

After that, dab the stain with a clean towel saturated with cold water until it disappears.

The idea is to use the least amount of product and moisture feasible.

This procedure works well for stains like blood, perspiration, vomit, pee, and other fluids.

You may build your own DIY solution instead of using an enzyme-based cleaner by combining dish soap with water and applying the resultant foam directly to the stain.

A DIY solution of equal parts cold water and hydrogen peroxide may also be made.

Step 5. Sprinkle Baking Soda Evenly Around The Mattress

If you are unable to expose your mattress to sunlight and fresh air, baking soda is the next best thing.

Apply a coating to the whole top of the mattress and let it sit for several hours (or better yet, apply before an overnight trip).

Baking soda will neutralize acid and absorb any moisture or odor that remains.

The more time you can leave baking soda on the mattress, the better! Open any windows in the room to allow the light and sunlight in while the mattress rests with the baking soda.

UV rays from the sun will help eliminate any mold or germs on the mattress.

Step 6. Vacuum Once More

Vacuum it completely once the baking soda has done its job.

(If you have a fabric headboard, this is also an excellent time to vacuum it!) It’s probably best to start again with anything bed-related.)

Step 7. Turn The Mattress Over

Once side one is immaculate, turn the mattress over and repeat steps 1–5 until both sides are equally clean and fresh.

Whether you’re thorough cleaning the mattress or not, flipping should be done on a regular basis.

People have long been told that they should turn their mattress every three months, but this is only true for spring mattresses, which compress with time.

As mattresses get more specialized, checking with the model maker is your best chance.

(For example, the foam Casper mattress just has to be rotated 180 degrees every few months, and Duxiana’s Dux mattress simply needs to be flipped and turned every few months.)

(Mattresses should be turned every three months as a general rule, or more often if you see any drooping.) Mattress flipping on a regular basis will help the mattress wear evenly and last longer.)

Step 8. Keep The Mattress Safe

It’s time to safeguard your mattress now that you know how to clean it.

Cover your new mattress with a mattress protector after it’s completely dry.

This will make future cleaning simpler and protect it from spills, dirt, and other annoyances (i.e.

bed bugs).

Step 9. Use A Fitted Sheet To Keep Dust Out

Keeping the space surrounding the mattress clean and using fitted sheets that are routinely cleaned should protect it from dust.

Neil explains.

Wrapping mattresses and box springs with mattress encasements, on the other hand, prevents dust mites from taking up residence, according to Ed – a good option for individuals with allergies or asthma.

Cleaning a mattress will undoubtedly prolong its life and make sleeping on it a pleasure, but all good things must come to an end.

Consider replacing your mattress every eight years or so.

According to Ed, body imprints and drooping show that it no longer provides enough support.

It’s also important to pay attention to your body

Neil adds.

Waking up in agony or sleeping badly every night are signals that it’s time to move on.

FAQ About Clean A Mattress

What should I clean a mattress with?

To make a mattress stain remover, use dish soap, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide. This combination is best applied using a spray bottle. After spraying the stains, wipe or massage them with a cloth or rag. Natural cleansers and treatments are another option for removing mattress stains.

What happens when you pour baking soda on your mattress?

Remove all of the bedding first. Then, using a colander, sprinkle baking soda over the whole mattress. Baking soda absorbs smells by pulling dirt and moisture out of the air. Allow for an hour to an hour and a half of resting time.

How often should you clean your mattress?

We suggest washing your mattress around once every six months. If you spill anything on your mattress, you should clean it as soon as possible before the stain sets in. If you use a good mattress cover, you won’t have to clean your mattress as often.

Is it good to vacuum your mattress?

Vacuuming the mattress at least once a month is also a good idea. In your mattress, dust, dander, and dust mites accumulate. Even those of us who do not suffer from allergies may discover dust and grime in our mattresses. Using the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner, vacuum your mattress.
